I’ve been on the look out for a little awhile, and had an aircooled project on the books for the last ten years or so..
This one showed up yesterday in town; going to look at it tonite.
ad says; “ 1966 VW bug whole or parts ,has not run in years”
Looks complete, we’ll see what the rust is like..

That reminds me, I still want to build a Baja Bug.

It looks pretty solid, but you never know what the floor looks like until you can get under it.

that car looks to have real straight sheetmetal. and doesnt have a million layers of paint on it. check the heater channels where the pan meets the heater channels.... the floor right between the pedals and seat, under the battery...... check the head, where the torsion bars meet the pan... check the front apron to see if its been run under another car and put back.
see if the wiring in back under the trunk has been on fire..... check the fuel hoses(they have a way of leaking and catching fire)
see if the vin numbers on the pan match the vin on the dash, the vin on the front apron.....

Pan is surprisingly solid; this is pass rear under the batt;
Sills are gone though;

Vin numbers match and are correct for Nov 1965 build, Enging code is correct for the ‘FO’ 1300 from 1966.
The doorsills are rusted through, and also the tough spots you mentioned in the bulkhead behind the wheels front and back.
A little crinkle up front, not much though;

the door sills being rusted through, and the inner fenders is bad news. they are what are referred to as “structural”. not the end of the world, but something that will need to be fixed.
what i meant about the vins on the body, was to make sure they are all from the same vehicle.
that front wrinkle isnt bad, just lets you know its been hit..
also twist on the crank pulley with the ignition off.... see if it is stuck.
they sell all the patch panels. thats not a problem. its just the time investment to repair.
does it have paper on it???
what is the price on it???

Has papers, was last insured when it was parked in 1989 lol. They’ve started it and had it running as late as two years ago.
asking $1000
Heartbreaking because it’s local with history, and original.. My project budget is 10K, but I’m trying to avoid a total pan off resto. This one is the cheapest - but could easily add up once the welding starts.

$1000 WITH PAPERS....... and it was running.....
price is right....... haggle if you want, but no point arguing over a few dollars.
nothing that you cant put back together..... if you needed to you could pick up another not rusted parts shell for not much $$$$. for patch panels.
if youre going for beautiful numbers matching original restoration.....pass
if you just want a fun driver.. pick it up.

I’m passing, but putting it out to the local vw club - someone will grab it quick - if they haven’t already.
I’m not looking at a Vallone level resto, but my budget is high enough to look for a more solid starting points. I’ve got a lead on a solid 66 a little ways away, waiting for things to line up. Thanks for your input!

yeah, no problem...... what you could also do, that is if you didnt mind the work, is pull all the good ‘66 specific sheetmetal, and use it on your “real” project. then sell the running moving “tub” pan and top body minus doors. for nearly the $1000 you would have in it....
i understand its a local car with “history” so that might make it hard on you.
i’ve been told, and have often found them to be right, that you should always start with the best/nicest car that you can afford.
best of luck
